Import papers

Quick Add, import modal, drag-and-drop, and attaching PDFs.

Quick Add (batch DOIs)

  1. In the library toolbar, click Quick Add.
  2. Paste text containing one or more DOIs (for example from an email or reference list).
  3. Confirm import.

Each DOI imports with per-row progress. Invalid DOIs are flagged; valid ones still import.

Import modal

  1. Click Import in the toolbar (keyboard I with a row selected opens import from the library).
  2. DOI lookup — Enter a DOI and fetch metadata from CrossRef. Edit fields if needed, then save.
  3. Manual entry — Enter title, authors, year, and source without a DOI.
  4. Attach PDF — Choose a file before saving so the paper opens in the built-in viewer.

Drag and drop

Drag PDF files onto the library area to create a new paper. Metadata is extracted when the PDF contains a DOI.

Drop is disabled in Trash, while a PDF tab is active, or in the publications feed view.

Attach or replace PDF later

For a paper without a file, use Upload in the File column and choose a PDF.

Open Access auto-download

When enabled in Settings → Open Access, importing a DOI without a PDF may trigger an automatic download from open-access sources (Unpaywall). Configure your email for the Unpaywall API in Settings.

Free-tier limits

At the paper limit on a free signed-in account, import and Quick Add show a limit reached dialog with an upgrade path.

Other import paths

  • Browser connector — from publisher pages and Google Scholar
  • CLIavera import-doi, import-file, import-references
