AI assistant
Configure providers, chat, and context from papers and notes.
The AI assistant runs on your API keys — not bundled with Avera Pro. It works offline only for configuration; sending messages needs network access to your provider.
Open the panel
- Toggle the right panel from the global chrome.
- Select the AI tab (switch away from Friends when both are open).
Configure a provider
- Choose OpenAI or Anthropic.
- Enter your API key and save.
Keys are stored on your device. Switch providers to change models and endpoints.
Chat
- Type in the composer and send.
- Responses stream token by token.
- Use clear chat to reset the conversation history.
Without a valid key, sending a message prompts you to configure one — the app should not crash.
Context bar
The assistant can include context from your current work:
| Source | When included |
|---|---|
| Selected papers | 1–3 papers selected in the library |
| Active note | A note tab is open |
| Publication feed item | Viewing an RSS item |
Responses should respect this context when you ask about your reading or notes.
Privacy
Prompts go directly to the provider you configure. Avera does not substitute its own cloud model unless you add one through supported provider settings.
